This wedding will be hard to forget... let me tell you why.
All my life I lived next to Paraguay, a country that without a doubt I have a great appreciation for since my childhood. So when I received the message from Mapi telling me that theri plans were to get married in San Bernardino (a place where we used to go on vacation with my family) I was very happy. It was my first wedding in Paraguay and I had not visited this other side of the country for so many years. I had to go.
—I'll be back in 8 days—that's what I told my girlfriend before leaving for Mexico City airport (I hadn't told anyone in Argentina either. It was a very short trip).
After the surprise and a few days at home, I drove to San Bernardino, which welcomed me with a warmth typical of the country at this time of year. We began with the preparations for the bride in the company of her friends of many years and her family while Juanca did the same in a room a few meters away. Once we were ready, we took the Mini Cooper that was waiting for us to go to the church where the religious ceremony took place.
Minutes later we were back on top of our little car (also the protagonist of the wedding) towards Lake Ypacaraí for some photos.
The reception was at Tatano Posada Hotel with views of the lake and a spectacular sunset, which gave us a great setting for their civil union in view of those closest to them. And finally, like every Latinamerican wedding... the party was a bomb! From start to finish. What great moments we shared!
The next morning it was time to say goodbye. And it was at breakfast when we saw the cover of the newspaper. The news told us that in 24 hours the borders would be closed as well as the airports. Covid-19.
And that's how those 8 days of visiting turned into almost 9 months. Undoubtedly very hard times for everyone.
At the end of November of that fateful 2020, in an empty Asunción airport, a cleaning man taps me on the shoulder and tells me that a couple was calling me from outside. It was Mapi and Juanca who, in the middle of the night, came to say goodbye to me on this unknown long visit.
They are the best.
